Roles & permissions

Every Nexus account has one of three roles: member, moderator, or admin. Roles are assigned per-user and can be changed from Admin → Members.

The default role for all new accounts. Members can:

  • Read posts and replies (in public spaces, or all spaces when logged in)
  • Create posts and replies (subject to registration and posting settings)
  • React to posts and replies
  • Follow spaces and tags
  • Send direct messages (after 24 hours account age)
  • Edit and delete their own posts and replies
  • Report content

All member permissions, plus:

  • See all spaces including private ones
  • Hide and delete any post or reply
  • Pin and unpin posts (globally or within a space)
  • Lock posts
  • Ban, mute, and suspend users
  • Approve content in the pending approval queue
  • Resolve reports
  • View the moderation log
  • Verify user email addresses manually

Moderators cannot access the admin panel or change forum settings.

All moderator permissions, plus:

  • Full access to the admin panel
  • Change all forum settings
  • Create, edit, and delete spaces and tags
  • Manage extensions
  • Change any user’s role
  • Delete user accounts
  • Create user accounts manually

The very first account registered on a fresh Nexus install is automatically assigned the admin role. All subsequent accounts default to member.

From Admin → Members, use the role dropdown in the members table to change any user’s role. You cannot change your own role.

Separately from roles, every user has a status that can be modified by moderators and admins:

StatusEffect
activeNormal account — no restrictions
mutedThe user’s posts go into the pending approval queue rather than appearing immediately
suspendedThe user cannot log in. All active sessions are revoked immediately. Can be time-limited.
bannedThe user cannot log in. All active sessions are revoked immediately. Permanent until explicitly unbanned. Banned users do not appear in member lists or search results.
pending_deletionThe user has scheduled account deletion. They cannot create new posts.

Mute and suspend can be applied with an optional duration (in minutes) after which the status automatically expires. Ban has no automatic expiry.

All status changes are recorded in the moderation log.
